About

Yiannis Papatheodorou was born in 1970. He holds a BA from the Department of Classics,
University of Athens (1993) and a PhD in Modern Greek Literature (2000) from the same
university. His doctoral thesis focused on the “Rhetorics of Difference” in Stratis Tsirkas’s
post-war novel “Drifting Cities”. His research interests include Literary Studies and Cultural
Poetics while he also works on the archival sources of modern and contemporary social
history. He has received scholarships from the Greek State Scholarship Foundation (I.K.Y.)
and the Centre of Mediterranean Civilization, Tel Aviv University. He has taught at the
University of Thessaly and at the Greek Open University. He is currently Assistant Professor
of Modern Greek Literature at the University of Ioannina. He has published articles on
Modern Greek Literature in several journals and collective volumes. He has recently published the book "Romantic Destinies. Aristotelis Valaoritis as "national poet", Vivliorama, Athens, 2009. His forthcoming books
include “Drifting Stories. Essays on Stratis Tsirkas' s work" and "National Road. The politics of romantic Fiction in the 19th century”. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the
journal Historein. He often publishes in the Athens daily newspapers Avgi, Eleutherotypia
and Ta Nea.
